The 'real' Satyajit Ray - caught on camera

He took Indian cinema to the world stage. But very few know that Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray while being a perfectionist was almost an ''autocrat'' when it came to filmmaking, right from scripting to camera handling to direction.

A rare series of photographs depicting the "real" Ray - the man and his passion - are currently being depicted at an exhibition hosted by the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Bangalore. Titled "Satyajit Ray: From Script to Screen", it displays a suite of photographs by Nemai Ghosh who was closely associated with Ray. With 101 photos, the month-long exhibition was inaugurated by Jawahar Sircar, secretary in the union culture ministry on Tuesday evening.

"Satyajit Ray is a film institution. Nobody can take his place. The exhibition is an attempt to discover the man and his work. We're grateful that Ghosh made an attempt to capture some of the most interesting moments from his life," Rajiv Lochan, director of NGMA, told reporters. Narrating his close association with Ray, the director who made films like "Pather Panchali", Ghosh said, "I was lucky. I came in touch with Ray during the beginning of my career in photography in 1968. I saw him closely while he was at work. Be it during the shooting schedule or while writing his scripts, he was like an autocrat. He took control of the entire cast and crew."

Most of the photographs at the exhibition depict Ray deeply engrossed in his work during the shooting of his films. Many of the film frames that Ray would sketch before proceeding with a shoot were snapped up by Ghosh and these photographs are now on display. "These are rare moments from Ray's life and his works. He belonged to a rare breed of filmmakers who was a complete perfectionist. I spent hours with him, trying to know the real man the world knows as Satyajit Ray. My photographs are pieces of understanding of the real Ray," added Ghosh.

Ray, who shifted to filmmaking from advertising, directed 37 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. With his debut film "Pather Panchali" (1955), a modern-day Bengali classic, bringing into light rural life and its struggles, Ray brought worldwide attention to Indian cinema at large. Apart from an Oscar, Ray was honoured with several national and international awards. He passed away in 1992.

I want to carry on acting in Bollywood: Giselle Monteiro

Brazilian model Giselle Monteiro, better known as Harleen Kaur from Saif Ali Khan starrer 'Love Aaj Kal', is keen to continue working in Bollywood films.

"I want to continue acting in Bollywood and will start shooting for 'Purani Jeans' soon," said Monteiro, who walked on the ramp in Delhi for the first time on the second day of the Wills India Fashion Week.

The 19-year-old model, who walked twice in the day for designers Kavita Bhartia and Ranna Gill, was more than happy to be the part of a fashion show in India.

"This is my first ramp walk at WIFW and I am glad to be working with new designers and new collections," said Monteiro.

Talking about the difference between modelling in India and abroad, she said, "India is a different market altogether and the designs here are so colourful. I am happy to have been accepted in the fashion circuit here."

Gill, who showcased her 'I am Every Woman' spring summer 2010 collection at the WIFW, said that she likes Monteiro so much that she asked her to be the showstopper for her.

"I loved Giselle so much in the film that I asked her to be the showstopper for my show and she said 'yes'," said Gill.

I do not want to repeat myself: Urmila Matondkar

Bollywood beauty Urmila Matondkar who seems to be on a self-imposed sabbatical from films says that she does not want to walk the beaten track and repeat the kind of work she has already done.

The 35-year-old actress, who has appeared in very select films in the past few years, was in the national capital today to walk for designer Jaya Rathore's bridal collection on the last day of The Wills India Fashion Week here.

"I have reached a stage in my career when I do not want to do the kind of films which I have already done or act in films which are not worth my while," said Matondkar.

The actress, who shot to fame with her role in 'Rangeela' in 1995 was last seen in 'Karzzz' last year opposite Himesh Reshammiya.

Talking about her stint on the ramp, Matondkar said, "I have always liked walking on the ramp because it involves style and glamour and I do identify with Jaya's designs, so I agreed to walk for her."

The actress believes that when a celebrity endorses a designer's collection, it does increase the glamour quotient a tad bit.

"If the designer is talented, her creation will attract attention automatically. And if a celebrity endorses the clothes that does increase the glamour and attraction little bit," she said.

Ranbir, Katrina end WIFW grand finale in style

Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif sashayed down the ramp at the grand finale of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) for designer Rohit Bal, bringing down the curtains of the five-day event in style.

Dressed in an embroidered white sherwani, Kapoor on Wednesday night managed to steal the hearts of many girls in the audience, who couldn't stop gushing about the star's chocolaty looks. Pretty Katrina Kaif, attired in a short white dress, looked like a Barbie doll. Another highlight of the show was a live performance by Orissa's Prince Dance Group that recently won the dance reality show "India's Got Talent".

Since Bal is always associated with grandeur, the sets reflected flamboyance and style. The glass ramp had gold lotus flowers underneath. The main show area was draped with golden curtains. Complementing the ambience perfectly were the clothes that talked about the Mughal era when India was the land of maharajas (kings). The collection was appropriately called Yasas, which means grand in Sanskrit.

Talking about his collection, Bal said: "The collection is a reflection of incredible talent that we have in India in terms of artisans and craftsmanship. The line is an ode to India's rich heritage." "It is about India, which was once known as the 'Golden Peacock'. Through this line, I am bringing that golden era back to India," he added. The collection had a mix of brocades, velvets in the pre-Mughal and Mughal designs like long and short anarkalis, sherwanis, jodhpuri pants, dresses and long coats. The collection will also be retailed through Wills Lifestyle outlets across India.

Studio 18 to release 225 prints of London Dreams overseas

A whopping 225 prints of 'London Dreams,' featuring Salman Khan and Asin, will be distributed overseas by its international distributor Studio 18.
According to film trade sources, the film by Vipul Shah will hit the screens on October 30 even in some of the lesser known bollywood patronising areas such as Fiji, Indonesia and some scandinavian countries and would have sizeable number of shows apart from high yielding markets such as the UK, US, Canada, UAE and Australia and New Zealand, where it would see a large release.
The film, which opens in the UK and UAE tomorrow, would have a day to day outing on the next day at North America/Canada, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, East Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Pakistan, Mauritius, Fiji and Australia/New Zealand.
The film had a premier in UAE yesterday.

Deepika-Ranbir relation on the rocks?

Everything has been said and done about Deepika Padukone and Ranbir and their relationship. The latest buzz to hit the industry is that their rapport is on the rocks and the duo is planning to call it off.
“The buzz is that Deepika and Ranbir are planning to call of their relationship as the things are not going well between the two. Also it’s heard that Deepika is blaming Katrina for the same,” chirps the khabroo.
Elaborating more on their split, our source adds, “During the making of the film Ajab Prem Ki Gjab Kahani, Ranbir and Katrina came close to each other. This proximity was not taken well by Deepika and the lovebirds started having arguments.”
“Now the things have gone from bad to worse and thus the couple are planning to call it off rather than dragging the relationship,” concludes the source.

Yes you have heard it right; the vivacious beauty of Bollywood, Shilpa Shetty is all set to tie the knot with her fiancée Raj Kundra next month. The preparations have already started.
“The venue is booked and the preparations for the same are on going on very strongly. Along side the duo are just waiting for Shamita Shetty to come out of Bigg Boss house,” chirps the source.

Kareena Kapoor's upcoming movie 'Kurbaan', a romantic thriller

Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor promoted her upcoming movie 'Kurbaan' at a gala event here last evening.
Set in the United States, ''Kurbaan'' is a romantic thriller with terrorism as its backdrop.

Kareena said that the film provides a balanced dose of love, intensity and emotions.

"''Kurbaan'' is a very different kind of film, it is more like an English movie. As far as the issue of tagline is concerned, I can say that it is because the film contains lot of intensity and emotions, it has gritty," said Kareena

The film tries to depict the post bombing effect on the daily lives of Muslim population living in the US after September 11 attacks on the World Trade Towers.

On this score, Kareena said that though the film deals with militancy, it is a romantic thriller.

"It has nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks on World Trade Centre. Though it has terrorism as a backdrop but it is love story," she added.

She also promoted this film on a private FM radio station.

Directed by a debutant Rensil D''Silva, the film stars Saif Ali Khan, Dia Mirza, Kiron Kher, Vivek Oberoi and Om Puri.

Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant have composed the music for the songs penned by famed lyricist and screenplay writer Prasoon Joshi who is also renowned in the world of advertising and marketing.

The film is slated to release November 27.

One film at a time is ideal, says Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has said that he believes in doing one film at a time, which he considered an ideal formula.
He said this while speaking at an event to launch the Idea GSM services here today.

Bachchan, who will be seen playing the role of Lord Ram in director Mani Ratnam''s upcoming film ''Ravana'', shared candid moments with mediapersons on the occasion.

He has just wrapped up shooting for the film with wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

"Well ''Ravana'' is nearing completion. I wrapped the shoot. We have the post-production work going on. Next month, I am gonna start shooting for Ashutosh''s next film. So these are the films I am working on right now. I like to work on one project at a time," he said.

The film ''Ravana'' has been shot in south India and in some parts of Sri Lanka.

The movie was initially scheduled to go on the floor in the first week of October.

Karan Johar's film to create 200 jobs in Sydney

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar's Hindi remake of "Stepmom" will be shot in Sydney and will create 200 jobs for people in the Australian city, said Virginia Judge, minister assisting the Premier on the Arts.
"This movie will take Sydney to Bollywood and an audience of more than one billion people. This is the first Australian production from one of Bollywood's most iconic filmmakers Karan Johar," said Judge Tuesday in a press statement.

To be directed by Siddharth Malhotra, the film is inspired by director Chris Columbus' 1998 hit drama "Stepmom", a heartwarming tale of two women - divorced Susan Sarandon and the new woman (Julia Roberts) in her ex-husband's life - and the problems they face to find a common ground of understanding.

"We are excited to showcase the very best that Australia has to offer and we hope to bring back some of the infectious spirit and charm that has become synonymous with Australia and Australians," said Karan, who is producing it under his banner Dhama Productions.

The Hindi remake stars Kareena Kapoor and Kajol and it will be extensively shot in Sydney.

"A film-friendly place with the best locales worldwide all in one city and suited to the requirements of my script. Besides, one needs to work with good people so what better place than Sydney," said Malhotra.

Dharma has hired Sydney-based TEMPLE as the Australian production company.

"Karan Johar is India's iconic filmmaker and represents the modern professional brand of Indian cinema. His company's decision to film in New South Wales (NSW) will not only take Indo Australian film links to a higher level but will also provide opportunity for Australian films and stories to develop collaborative links with India.

"Dharma filming in NSW is the ultimate compliment to Australia from Bollywood and as a filmmaker I am hoping this will result in deeper collaborations and co-productions between India and Australia," said Anupam Sharma, filmmaker and Head of the Australian production company Films and Casting Temple.

Relive bond of friendship with 'London Dreams'

Massive stage settings, rock concerts and music as a binding factor, Ajay Devgn-Salman Khan starrer "London Dreams", which releases Friday, relies on the bond of friendship more than its rock background.
Produced and directed by Vipul Shah, the movie stars Asin Thottumkal in the female lead, while Akshay Kumar will be seen in a cameo. Rannvijay Singh and Om Puri too feature in the movie.

" �London Dreams' is a drama about two friends and their relationships, their roles, individuality and problems," Ajay said.

Added Asin: "It is a musical with a lot of emotions and twists in the story. But it's something that heavily relies on music."

Shot extensively in Paris and London, the story revolves around childhood friends Arjun (Ajay) and Mannu (Salman) who have a music lineage in their family history.

Arjun dreams of being on stage as a performer to live up to his grandfather's unfulfilled ambitions while Mannu has little interest in the instruments of his father, a music teacher.

Arjun's determination takes him to London where he forms a band with Priya (Asin) and others. But his friend Mannu tries to make his livelihood as a wedding band performer in the village.

Arjun eventually invites Mannu to London to complete his band contrary to his own belief that the latter can create a competition.

But Mannu surprises him by turning out to be an entertainer. With his unique style, he becomes more popular with the audiences leaving Arjun envious. His insecurity increases when he realises Priya is smitten by Mannu.

The band embarks on a three-city tour where Arjun deceives Mannu into promiscuous sex and illicit drugs. As the tour concludes, the band heads to London to perform at Wembley Stadium where Mannu comes to senses and chooses the righteous path and supports his friend.

"London Dreams" has managed a good buzz, courtesy the big names associated with it.

Noteworthy is that the songs in the movie have been shot like live concerts.

The movie is releasing with another-big budget venture "Aladin".

Promotions of films a test of patience: Bachchan

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who is currently busy promoting his film "Aladin", says that movie promotion is not only an art but also a test of one's patience.
"Promotions of films has now become an art, an exercise in management, a test of patience and an ability to be able to answer the same questions in and out with the same intensity and conviction that you may have expressed in the previous interview," Amitabh posted on his blog.
Amitabh also said that he admires journalists relentless pursuit for exclusives.
"They are all around you waiting in anticipation for their turn to arrive, to be able to turn on their microphones and cameras, to put on that TV anchor demeanour and strike out. I have admired their relentless pursuit for that exclusive, their determined effort to get something out of their subjects which has not been covered by the other rivals, present merely inches away," he wrote.
Further praising journalists, he wrote: "The speed with which they (journalists) all operate is incredible. How they devise the look of the interview, what would need to be shown as a clip to enhance the program, the reference material of the past, the music and the editing of the material they have, the headlines that need to be created and then finally the presentation on the broadcast.
"...But there is never ever a complaint, an objection to a delayed request and neither is there need to bring out competition at the street level. There is a deep understanding and respect for each other. A desire to share information and to see that it is disseminated in a manner that would be the requirement of their seniors."
Releasing Friday, "Aladin" is the modern version of the fantasy story and also stars Riteish Deshmukh and Sri Lankan actress Jacqueline Fernandes.

Ranbir, Katrina to walk ramp for Rohit Bal at WIFW?

Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are expected to walk the ramp together for the first time for designer Rohit Bal's show at the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

Bal will bring the curtain down on the fashion extravaganza Friday with his show and Ranbir and Katrina, who will be seen together in the forthcoming romantic comedy "Azab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", will be his showstoppers.

"Ranbir and Katrina are both great friends with Rohit. They will walk the ramp for the first time together for his show to promote their film 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani'," a source said.

Directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" is slated for a Nov 6 release.

'Basra' will be out of the box: Abhay Deol

NAs an actor he loves to experiment and as he turns producer with “Basra”, Abhay Deol promises to be high on content. He says the action thriller will not only keep audiences on the edge of their seats but also make them think.

“There are three genres -- romance, comedy and action. They are mainstream inherently; so what I’m doing is taking a commercial genre and within it experimenting a little bit,” Abhay told IANS in an interview.

The film is going on the floors early next year. Abhay has roped in Navdeep Singh of “Manorama Six Feet Under” to helm the project that will feature him along with Shahana Goswami and another girl whose name has been kept secret.

” ‘Basra’ is high on content, but a good dose of action sequences will make it edgy and pretty dark as well. In other words, it is a mainstream movie but also has something that will make people think and keep them on the edge of their seats,” he said.

“The thing about action films is that they are high on drama in terms of action sequences, have songs and other things, but content is secondary. For me, the idea was to get something that has content so that the action has some meaning. That’s when ‘Basra’ came in,” he added.

The 32—year—old was launched by his uncle Dharmendra with “Socha Na Tha” in 2005. He then went on to prove his mettle with films like “Ahista Ahista”, “Manorama Six Feet Under”, “Ek Chalis Ki Last Local”, “Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd” and more recently “Dev D”.

When asked what motivated him to don the producer’s hat, Abhay revealed: “I had bad experiences in the past, with ‘Manorama...’ being the classic example where the director did his job — he made it well, actors gave their level best but when it was the producer’s turn to distribute and market the film, it was nowhere to be seen.

“Not just ‘Manorama...’, I had been through this for some of my other films too. I realised that I need to protect my films because the director will move on, the producer will move on too but as an actor I will be considered a flop if things will not work.

“I also realised I need to protect myself,” he explained.

Along with that he also wanted to give a platform to new and dynamic directors to make films that have quality content.

“The idea was also to provide platform to filmmakers to make the kind of movies they want to make --probably high on content, low on budget. Let’s see where the formula goes and then I will take it from there,” said the actor, who was in the capital to attend the 11th Osian’s Cinefan film festival where two of his films, “Dev D” and “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!” were screened.

So does he plan to sign his cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol for his home productions?

“I would love to sign them for my films but it also depends on whether the role is right for them. So I don’t think I will be able to approach them for my first venture, but something in the future definitely,” said Abhay.

Right now the actor is excited about his upcoming film “Road” with Dev Benegal and his romantic film “Ayesha” with Sonam Kapoor.

Shilpa’s wedding date finalised

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty says that her wedding date has been finalised, but she will announce it only when her sister Shamita is by her side.

“I know everyone’s eager to know about the wedding date. All I can say is yes it’s been finalised and I will make an official announcement as soon as I know when Shamita’s coming out,” Shilpa, who got engaged to London-based Raj Kundra, posted on her blog.

Shamita is currently participating in the Colors’ reality show Bigg Boss 3. She is locked in the house with 10 more inmates and has no connection with the world outside. Shilpa says she missed her sister.

“It’s been a time of both joy and sorrow for me. The joy is obvious because Raj and I feel happy to take our relationship to the next level, but as most of you know my sister Shamita is still in the Bigg Boss house and could not attend. She doesn’t even know.

“The date was decided a week ago and we all came to the consensus that we should go ahead because another good mahurat (auspicious time) was a long way off. And considering Raj’s parents and relatives were down from London for a week, so it seemed convenient,” she wrote.

“I wanted to have Shamita there during this special moment, but I had to be considerate towards Raj’s family too. So for all those who wanted to know why I went ahead without Shamita, it was a difficult decision but this is the answer.”

Shilpa admits that when her sister comes out of Bigg Boss house, the news of the engagement will shock her.

“I know Shamita will be shocked... she’ll kill me. Missed her more than words can describe but I’m sure she’ll understand! Can’t wait to show her my ring,” she wrote.

So far Shilpa has not commented on her sister’s stay in Bigg Boss house. But now she says that she is proud of Shamita.

“I’ve never commented on what I think of her in there, but just want to say she’s been the pampered baby in our house. It made our whole family so proud to see her have no airs and do all the chores with no qualms,” wrote Shilpa.

“She’s never cooked in her life and I saw her make rotis. I felt terrible watching her cry on TV, but I am amazed to see her growth on the show. This will definitely make her a stronger person. So proud of the way she’s conducting herself with so much dignity.”

I'm talking to Hrithik for my next film: Vishal Bhardwaj

He carved a niche for himself in filmdom with non-starrers like “Makdee” and “Maqbool”. But composer filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj now says star presence is extremely important for a film’s box office success and that he is trying to rope in Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan for his next movie.

“I think stars are very important to reach out to the people. Along with that they are good actors as well. I think Shah Rukh (Khan) is a very fine actor, so is Aamir (Khan), Hrithik (Roshan), Saif (Ali Khan) and even Shahid (Kapoor),” Bhardwaj said.

“If the audiences love them and they don’t mind coming to the cinema halls to see their faces and their costumes, then that’s good because we can tell a story through them,” added the director who teamed up with big stars for “Omkara” and “Kaminey”.

He made his directorial debut “Makdee” (2002) with Makrand Deshpande, Shweta Prasad and Alaap Mazgaonkar. The only big name in the cast was Shabana Azmi.

Two years later, Bhardwaj came out with his highly acclaimed movie “Maqbool”, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous play “Macbeth”. It didn't boast of a star line up either -- Pankaj Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Tabu formed the cast.

But his next directorial venture “Omkara”, again based on Shakespeare’s play “Othello”, was bejwelled with big names like Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Vivek Oberoi.

His latest hit “Kaminey” too had Bollywood stars Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.

Now Bhardwaj is trying to sign Hrithik and Priyanka for his next venture. “I am in talks with Hrithik for a film but nothing is confirmed at the moment. However, Priyanka is confirmed for that project,” he informed.

The 49-year-old started his Bollwyood innings as a composer for Gulzar’s “Maachis” (1996) followed by movies like “Satya” (1998) and “Chachi 420” (1998) before taking on the director’s mantle. He has proved his versatility as a music composer, singer, writer and filmmaker.

When asked what among these gives him maximum creative satisfaction and enjoyment, Bhardwaj said: “Enjoyment keeps changing. When you are making a song and it turns out to be very good, then you enjoy that process and that gives you creative satisfaction.

“Similarly, when you are making a film, you keep struggling on it for seven-eight months to set it right and finally when you see the result then that too gives you creative satisfaction and enjoyment. Satisfaction, happiness, enjoyment are all very momentary. They keep changing,” he said.

Bhardwaj was in the capital to attend the 11th Osian’s Cinefan Film Festival and said that such festivals are imperative so that movie aficionados can see entire films without any censorship.

“People need to see the entire films. Normally, the censor board cuts half of the film; at least there is some place where we can see the film without censorship,” he said.

He also feels that censorship should be a personalised thing. “We should be our own censor boards. It should not be imposed on us. This censor board came from the British because they didn’t want the Indian movement and Indian struggle to be seen by others, but somehow laws in our country don’t change,” he rued.

Asin spends a quiet birthday

Asin Thottumkal, whose back-to-back promotional campaigns for London Dreams left her exhausted, ushered in her birthday quietly with a few friends and family members. She says it was the most “peaceful and happy birthday” of her life.

“Actually I hadn’t slept at all. I had been working non-stop for London Dreams for the last one week with just three-four hours of sleep. Anyway I’m making up for the exhausting week with the most peaceful and happy birthday of my life,” said Asin, who turned 24 on Monday.

Asin brought in her birthday with a quiet dinner on Sunday night with her close friends. “It was eight of my closest friends at dinner. We had a ball. At midnight they made me cut a cake. I felt 12 years old again.”

Earlier during the evening Asin arrived home to a big surprise.

“When I opened the door the entire house was done up with balloons by my parents, just like they used to do for my birthdays when I was a child. I had to burst quite a few balloons because there was no room to even walk. I’ve never felt happier,” she said.

On her birthday the actress gorged on food and has regained all the weight that she had to lose for her role in London Dreams.

“I had to be much thinner for my character. Now in 24 hours I think I’ve regained all the weight that I lost for London Dreams I’ve been gorging non-stop on chocolates and chocolate cake. And there’s still so much left,” said Asin.

The second—half of the day was devoted to the kids in her high-rise apartment. They all love their Asin didi and wouldn’t miss her birthday for the world.

“Fortunately, there was enough cake and chocolates to go around. So it was great fun. This is the best birthday I had. I woke up to god knows how many SMSes and missed calls. I can’t believe so many people remembered my birthday and cared about it,” she said.

But by far the best part of her birthday was provided by her parents. “When I saw the trouble they had taken over decorating my place, I decided then and there that I’m the luckiest girl in the world.”

Big Switch for John Abraham

Bollywood’s Big Break comes knocking on Bruna’s door

Brazilian model Bruna Abdullah is readying herself for her big Bollywood break with Karan Johar’s I Hate Luv Storys starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor.

Bruna, who was last seen in an item song, Rehem Kare, in Anubhav Sinha’s Cash, was chosen after Dia Mirza declined the cameo because she was already doing a cameo in Karan’s other film, Kurbaan. That is when director Punit Malhotra began to look for a newer face and settled on Bruna. Bruna is now improving her diction and dialogue delivery. Even though the role is a cameo it is still pretty essential for the film.

The news was confirmed by Bruna’s manager at first but later denied.
